What are you currently listening to?
Liking the new Banks EP a lot. Took me a couple of listens with the Huerco S album for the penny to drop how good it is. Robert Rental YouTube porn. Kendrick Lamar. Lana Del Rey. Always Lana Del Rey.
What or whom inspired you the most to begin this project?
I was already producing music under my other name Chairman Kato. But then I experienced the breakup of a relationship and I went through a period of writing what became 'Aftershocks'. It felt too different to my Kato stuff to give it the same name and it was too personal to put a face to for a while. They're different people saying and doing different things.
Is there a story behind the name?
Haha. Isn't there always? You know that pornstar name game? It was the hyopthetical porn star handle of a friend of mine. As soon as I heard it I knew I'd use it for a project one day. The sound of the name fits the music though, guvnor.
Care to shed some light on your latest release; theme, favorite track(s), etc?
I brought the guitars and vocals to the foreground more on 'Severance'. I was listening to a lot of The Cure and Echo and The Bunnymen at the time and it just started coming out that way. It's late night music, definitely, as with everything I do. I'm kind of glad it's coming out when summer's over actually, it wouldn't have worked in mid-August. Fun's over, kids.
Will you be touring extensively for said release?
I've been rehearsing with a live band over the last few months. I felt it was important to bring some live musicians in rather than just fiddling with my laptop awkwardly. Instead I play guitar awkwardly. We've reinterpreted the songs so they sound quite different to the record. I think it's good to do that as far as possible, maybe surprise people a bit. We play the launch party for the EP this week and are lining up shows after that.
Got any other projects we should know about?
I've released 3 EPs as Chairman Kato but I've been mainly focusing on visual art this year using that name, in particular my 'Membranous Labyrinth' installation and my forthcoming 'Purgatory' at the V&A. I've been working on tracks for that name as well though and will be putting them together for release soon.
What movie would work best on mute while listening to you music?
Oh, probably something with lots of gratuitous bloodshed like Battle Royale or something. Nothing like a few Japanese schoolkids murdering each other to get the juices flowing.
You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
