REVIEW: Mi-Gu - Choose The Light

7 out of 10

Well before she released her self-titled solo debut in 2003, Mi-Gu's Yuko Araki had a rich music career. Apart from her collaborative work with bands like Cornelius and If By Yes, this young Japanese musician has spent her time for nearly two decades playing drums alongside such greats as Mike Watt and Yoko Ono. Yet if her solo albums have anything to prove, it's that Araki has never let her musical background get in the way of her making an idiosyncratic style of Electronica Pop that defies comparison.

On her newest release, 'Choose The Light', Araki collects eleven tracks from her past three releases. The result is a rich-in-detail album that plays out like a bag of musical treats. In just forty-two minutes, Araki's childish voice guides us through a merry world of Pop which features everything from the Glitch Electronics of “Lazy,” the polyrhythmic vibraphones of “Drummer And the Dancer,” to the Abstract Jazz stylings of “Touch Wood.”

Trust me, there's not a single dull track to be found on this album.
