REVIEW: Japanese Gum - End Of Summer E.P.

7 out of 10

If there was any general "theme" in music this year, the word "F-R-E-E" would come to mind. Ton's of bands are giving away there music out there (seriously TONS), all they ask is that you give it a fair chance and perhaps go to a show or two. One of those bands is Japanese Gum, whom are back with another batch of delicious Indie Experimental Electronic goodies.

"End Of Summer E.P." begins with a melancholy hum, followed shortly by a sadder guitar tone, then followed by a "somewhat glitchy"/Industrial-esque drum beat sound and lugubrious vocals (which almost sound shy underneath a blanket of reverb and distorted guitar sounds/walls of other noises). There isn't really a "general tone" on this album though. It goes from down beat to up to almost somewhat weird (the "good kind" of weird). "End Of Summer E.P." comes off as an "Indie Rock album as mixed through the eyes of Clouddead" kind of experience.. Bizarre is a good descriptive word, maybe "playful"? Japanese Gum really are all over the map with their sound, for the most part it's Indie Electronic meets Dream Pop ..kind of. I don't know. Either way, I recommend checking this EP out, but I HIGHLY recommend purchasing "Hey Folks! Nevermind, We Are All Falling Down", it's truly one of the most dynamic Dream Pop albums I own.

Reminds me of an "experimental"/more reverby Monster Movie with a bit more of an electronic edge. Stop reading, start downloading.

Standout Tracks: They're all great tracks/there's only 3 of them on here. I probably like "In The Shadow Of The Hood (i like the "curious" sounding sample at the end of this song..)" the most.
