Cool Video Funtime #162 - Hoop Dreams

REVIEW: Sweet Trip - Velocity Design Comfort

8.75 out of 10

Last year a slightly unknown band (a band I've never really heard anyone talk about anyways) released one of my favorite albums. The band is Sweet Trip. The album is "You Will Never Know Why", which was an interesting fusion of Bossa Nova style rhythms/sounds combined with Dream Pop, the end result being "crack addictive music".. Anywho, since then, I've made it point to try and collect most if not all of this band's impressive back catalogue. One of those release would be "Velocity Design Comfort", which still has the element of Dream Pop that I love so much, but instead of a stronger focus on "light hearted/breezy" atmospheres the direction shifts more towards sporadic "noise" and glitchy electronics. Think Jamie Lidell's first album meshed with sounds you could hear on a Broadcast album.

White noise, distorted twinkles, blurps, bleeps, scratches, catchy guitar riffs, easy-breezy (& beautiful) vocals, and a few other sounds that are nigh indescribable make this album a true standout amongst the many Dream Pop acts that currently over populate my Ipod. The thing I actually like the most with this release is Roberto Burgos' playful mix of electronics/distortions. Some of the electronics could have easily been placed on an Aphex Twin album without question, but that didn't stop Mr. Burgos from placing them on a "Dream Pop" album, which honestly just puts the biggest smile on my face. On top of the super sacchariferous music there is an even sweeter sound to be discovered which is Valerie Reyes' cavity inducing vocals. Ms. Reyes sings (and hums) her little heart out on nearly every track. Sometimes I am reminded of Trish Keenan (Broadcast), other times Allysa Masais (Mahogany). Actually, much like the band Mahogany, this band shares the same ideas/concepts, which is this; amazing music that should be waaaaay bigger than what it currently is and a "style" that is unique to said band only.. And truly, if any of the bands mentioned aboves get your mouth salivating with curiosity you need to hear this band right now. Please, if you like some of my recommendations take this one seriously, these guys will melt your heart away/get your blood moving & overall just put you in a good mood.

Sweet Trip should be Warp Records first official Dream Pop band, it just makes sense. Recommended for fans of Dream Pop most definitely. Recommended also for fans of twitchy electronics/IDM intertwined with upbeat pop music. NM, Recommended for fans of good music only, I love this s^!#. HIGHLY RecommENDed.

Standout Tracks: Gawd, they're all so good.. Velocity, Fruitcake And Cookies, Sept, International, Dedicated To All The Dancers Of The World A Round Form Of Fantasy

Speaking of "mystery" music..

CEO is Eric Berglund (Tough Alliance). His debut album "White Magic" comes out June 29th via Sincerely Yours.

If the rest of the album is just a quarter as good as the video shows we may have one of the best albums of the year on our hands..

Did I forget to mention..?

Iamamiwhoami just released their first single titled "O"

and (of course)..

Here is the video for the song:

ANNND.... here are the rest.

REVIEW: When The Clouds - The Longed For Season

6.25 out of 10

"The Longed For Season" is When The Clouds debut release. The music within is melancholy Post Rock with electronics intertwined as well as a few other lush/atmospheric stratiforms. The overall vibe is a soundtrack to a nice breezy day where your worries are no longer an issue.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.. I have grown tired of the genre "Post Rock". It's just not my thing anymore, more and more bands these days sound just like the rest. There isn't enough uniqueness/originality anymore, the music has lost it's "edge", & the scene has expanded itself into the Shoegaze/Dream Pop area while almost forgetting it's roots of truly emotional music without lyrics spelling out each and every note. With "The Longed For Season" I feel as if some of those unique layers of "emotional noise" have returned to form as well as picking up a few sounds that are comparable to Mum or maybe The Album Leaf along the way. The music is simple, but overall pleasing. A guitar, keyboard, and a sampler make these "lucid" sounds that standout as a "new"/fresh breath of air that is sure to sound pleasing after a disquieting day. Maybe a new revival is on the way, maybe not, who knows? Either way, if more "Post Rock" bands took a listen to what's going on inside the mind of Franceso Galano (WTC) they might find hope and inspiration into what could possibly be one of the last glimmering sounds of a drying genre.

Overall this EP will appeal to anyone into the Post Rock genre, as well as anyone into nice laid back music without any complications or intrusive layers getting in the way. An impressive debut for sure. I am interested to see where Mr. Galano takes his career.

Standout Tracks: Rise On (I like the glitchy guitar sampling on this one), The November Song (love the electronic layers underneath the guitar)

EIC'S10Q'S w/Serena-Maneesh

"..A true delight for fans of Psych Rock/Shoegaze music or even Smashing Pumpkins, had SP focused more on loud noise and a little less on pop.."

Serena-Maneesh
Psychotomimetic Obstreperous Concept

Serena-Maneesh Bio:
The team of musicians who each contribute to the band's sound is organized around its main protagonist and songwriter Emil Nikolaisen. Emil has previously appeared as a guitarist and songwriter in the indie band Royal, played the drums in Norwegian punk rock band Silver as well as in the retro-pop orchestra The Loch Ness Mouse. He even has a past as guitarist in the metal band Extol.

Important sources of musical inspiration are The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine, Amon Düül, The Stooges, Swans, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Stereolab, Royal Trux, Neu!, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. In late 2005, the band toured Europe in support of The Dandy Warhols. In early 2006, Serena-Maneesh landed the opening gig for British band Oasis during its UK tour. They supported Nine Inch Nails on the Australia/Japan leg of their 2007 world tour.

The highly acclaimed self-titled debut album was released on the Norwegian record-label HoneyMilk in the autumn of 2005. In December of the same year, the Norwegian vinyl label Hype City released an LP print featuring two exclusive tracks, and the Spanish indie distributor Touchme Records published the CD. In March 2006, the band announced its transfer to the Playlouder-branch of the Beggars Group established in Europe (UK, Germany and Italy), North America (United States and Canada) and Oceania (Australia). In June 2006, the band released an international edition of its self-titled album (both CD and LP) through the international label Playlouder.

The long-awaited second album Serena Maneesh 2: Abyss in B Minor was released in March 2010 on the renowned British independent label 4AD. According to Nikolaisen, it sounds like a "rock'n'roll chamber of magic."

Hello, how are you?
Great! floating far above the skies in an aeroplane through the waves of my dreams!

What are you currently listening to?
Jobim. Everywhere. All the time. His great relatives Brazilian duo Joyce, Gal Costa, Menescal.. Jimmy Webb... RTX.. Stooges..

Where does the name Serena Maneesh come from?
Somewhere in the native deserts of my West Coast Norwegian sour breeze of the mind

What’s the music scene like in your hometown?
Some good bands, lots of incredibly nice people, sometimes a little too nice, sometimes just good nice and great music comes out of it! But yes some good and quite diverse acts, some gifted people. People trying to contribute for a better music world.

It seems like it's been a while since you last released a new album, care to explain what you've been up to?
Restoration sleep, mind on other things, laboring time, recording and playing around with things for a couple of years

What is the theme behind your new album?
Underlying streams of melodic consciousness.. Heavy silk. Perfume from ancient times. Many ways to drape a melody. A whole story that needs to be listened to! Not just for the chosen few though. It should be for everyone! Give it time and it will embrace you.. heeeeee

Are you more proud of the music you make now or the music made back in the day?
Heading forwards, man! The future!! Grasping for everything that lies ahead.. New ideas to find, new stories to be told.. Right now this record has been with me so strongly for so long that I still sense the smoke in the air from it..

Is there a full US tour in the works?

Yes! Starting NOW* the 17th at SXSW in Texas, coming through the West Coast, up to Canada and some back and forth before starting heading down/aiming for New York as final destination. Really looking forward to sharing some music again!
*EDITORS NOTE: Interview done at the beginning of February.

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
It' s not the news bomb and it could never be: VU' s "banana record".

Are you living your dream?
I' m alive and still dreaming! Does that count? The journey is, you know the good old roller coaster, of sorrow and joy.. but if you' re not holding your dreams high and act upon them.. what' s left in such a dark hole?

Thanx SM!

Serena-Maneesh just wrapped up their US tour and are currently bouncing around different European venues...

Cool Video Funtime #160 - Milo

Pre-order the new BSS and get a FREE b-sides album..

From Broken Social Scene:

I know that some bands write their songs, rehearse them and then record them. Not Broken Social Scene. In recording Forgiveness Rock Record we did it our usual way: swimming in chaos and making it up as we go along. We started by loosely sketching out 30 songs in my garage, driving to Chicago, recording 20 of those, and then writing 20 more. The point was to never stop working. Whenever we got exhausted or overwhelmed we would take a breath, pick up our instruments and jam purely ‘for spirit purposes’. It was musical-therapy of sorts. Part of what kept the ideas flowing was Soma’s smaller, second studio where we could test out new ideas and experiment with overdubs. While John worked in the main room, this B-Room quickly became our musical kitchen where we cooked up soups of sound without the pressures time and money.

One evening, as a kind of exercise in spontaneity, Kevin, Brendan and I each took turns writing and recording minute-long “songs” with minimal overdubs just to see what would happen. We kept saying to John “we’re making you an EP!” It was a sort of first-thought-best-thought approach to music making. Within a few hours we had six lovely little soundscapes, one of which ended up being the closing song on Forgiveness Rock Record, ‘Me & My Hand’, and the rest became the beginnings of Lo-Fi For The Dividing Nights.

As we continued to work on Forgiveness the B-room became more and more important as both a musical and social outlet - there are a lot of us in Broken Social Scene and it’s hard for us to sit on our hands – so naturally Ohad, Sam and Sebastian each recorded a song in the same spontaneous way. ‘Song For Dee’, the only traditional “song” on Lo-Fi For The Dividing Nights, Brendan, Kevin and I recorded when we found out that our good friend Wayne’s dog died and we wanted to cheer him up.

All of the songs on Lo-Fi For The Dividing Nights were recorded in Soma’s B-Room while Forgiveness Rock Record was being made. What these songs have in common is that they were all written in a spirit of playfulness and fearlessness where we could throw our discrimination to the wind and let the judges and critics take the night off. This tiny B-Room sanctuary fomented a very positive frame of mind, ultimately leading to one of the most enjoyable album-making experiences we’ve ever had. We hope you enjoy listening to these songs as much as we enjoyed recording them.

EIC'S10Q'S w/The Delta Mirror

"..The adequate amount of IDM sounds are blaringly present, yet somehow washed away underneath an ocean of gazey/triumphant euphoria. Nice package of noise if you ask me.."

The Delta Mirror
Mechanized Nu-Gazers

The Delta Mirror Bio:
The delta mirror is Craig Gordon and Letdown aka David Bolt. The two started out as a hip hop duet in the early 90’s and have been making music in some form ever since. With the addition of Karrie K on bass, their sound has progressed to an ambient mix of Shoegazey guitar and Gothic vocals, but their production has held onto the same boom bap button pushing they started with. "Machines That Listen" is The Delta Mirror’s debut long play. Each song on this 9 track collection is a story that takes place in a different room in a hospital.

Hello, how are you?
Craig: Coolin.
David: Hecka good.

What are you currently listening to?
Craig: I've been on a listening to nothing but my friends bands kick for a while. A lot of VoicesVoices, Healamonster & Tarsier, Borneo, Odd Nosdam, and The Mathematicians, but my favorite band right now is our friends The Shimmies from Chico, CA. Chico is the next Omaha. A lot of incredible music is happening there right now.
David: Lately I've been getting really into minimal, ambient techno. There's this really great German producer called Pantha Du Prince who makes amazing "techno" music. The only thing that would make me classify it as techno is it's 4 on the floor drum beats, but the rhythms and melodies he makes are really textural and ethereal. Amazing stuff. Also Gui Boratto. Similar vibe and feel. Mix that in with a steady regimen of Elliott Smith, Sigur Ros, and Radiohead, and that's where I'm at. Shit, and Lykke Li, the Fuck Buttons, Stars of the Lid...I could go on and on. So much great music out there.

You guys were doing Hip Hop before you started The Delta Mirror right? What made you change genres?

David: Well it was actually a really natural progression for me. I used to be a 100% hip hop/scratch DJ. That's all I listened to, and all I played. It was pretty wack actually. Haha. I was a pretty closed minded dude. The only reason I started producing was to make beats to scratch to and have Craig and my friends rap over. As I started producing more, I started DJing less, and also started listening to lots of other music. Bjork, Radiohead, Boards of Canada...stuff that was pretty "out there" for me at the time. That was the shift for me right there. I started making more electronic, ambient stuff, but still tried to retain some of that hip hop aesthetic, drums that made your head break. During that time I was working on a solo project called letdown. The hip hop stuff that Craig and I were doing had been over and done with for a few years. I just kept crunching away at making my solo stuff, and every so often I'd send music to my friends to check out. Then one day Craig was listening to my newer music and thought, "heeeeey...maybe I could write to this," and so the Delta Mirror was born.

What’s the story behind the band name?
Craig: Dave and I were going back and forth with band names for a while. I don't know why it was so hard. At least once a day in conversation I find myself hearing an interesting word combination and thinking "hey that would be a cool band name," but for some reason coming up with a name for our band was impossible. I was trying to think of times that I had heard good band name candidates before and remembered a long time ago reading Aldous Huxly's A Brave New World and finding a pretty good band name. I couldn't really remember what it was though, so I had to read it again. It was in the part about the weekly print publications for each cast. The Alphas had a very sophisticated Wall Street Journal type of paper, the Betas had a trashy celebrity gossip type magazine, and the delta's had one page with a few monosyllabic words called The Delta Mirror. It turned out to be smack in the middle of the book, so I just went ahead and finished it. After doing all that work to find the name it didn't matter to me that people would probably think we were a blues band because of it, or that a Delta Mirror is an actual type of mirror. That was our name.

What exactly do you mean by "Machines That Listen"?
Craig: Well the songs on the record are all stories told about someone in a hospital, and our music is mostly made by machines, so it's like the machines listened to these people and wrote songs about what they heard. Also it sounds cool.

How did you come up with the theme for the album?
Craig: Dave and I had put a couple songs together and they both turned out to be about someone in a hospital. Until then it was a coincidence, but then I remembered that I had a song about someone identifying a body in a morgue (He was Worse than the Needle he Gave You) So I thought we should go with it. We even made one about someone in a waiting room (A Room for Waiting). I like that they all can be mistaken for love songs if you don't listen close.

I really love the electronics in your music, what kind of software do you use when creating it?
David: Actually I don't use a ton of software. I'm a hardware sort of guy through and through. I like that hands on approach to making music. Taking a keyboard, running it through some reverb, back through some shitty "no-fi" sampler, and seeing what I get. I know you can do that stuff with midi controllers and the like, but I just never got into that part. It always turned me off. I will say that I do use Reason quite a bit to get nice drums. There's this one plug-in Reason has called Scream that just covers anything you put through it with piss and grime and filth, just crunchy, dirty, disgusting, awesome drums. I use that a lot, usually making a drum sound and sampling it into my Akai, then banging out some drum patterns.

You recently covered TV On The Radio’s “Blind”, why did you choose to cover that track?
David: Well we're always bouncing ideas of each other for songs to cover. When I first heard TVOTR's Blind, I just KNEW I was going to cover it, so I started piecing the track together, laying out the foundation and what not. Craig heard it, wrote some killer guitar, and there it was. Down the road when Karrie came aboard her bass line really polished it up. I still love the original. It was a very hard song to sing because Tunde (of TVOTR) does some really amazing, but difficult, things with his voice in that song. It's just an incredible song.

You can only keep/listen to ONE album for the rest of your life ..which album would it be?
Craig: To All Beloved Enemies by The Shimmies, no question.
David: Most likely an Elliott Smith record.

Are you living your dream?
Craig: Absolutely! Sure I want a stable career in music and to be able to work exclusively on art, but things are still new right now. It's all just beginning. It wasn't that long ago I wasn't sure if anyone would ever hear our music, aside from those friends who are obligated to listen. There's also the possibility that our record will flop and we'll disappear into obscurity before we even get to record the next one, so I figure enjoy it because I doubt things will ever again be as exciting as they are right now.
David: Not quite yet. Still working a day job, and haven't traveled outside of the US at all yet. I really want to see the world a bit, and I'm hoping that this band is going to help that happen. We've been talking about touring around Europe which would be amazing. Maybe ask me again when that's happening.

Thanx Craig!

The Delta Mirror are currently touring here and there, let's hope they don't "disappear into obscurity" and that a new album could be on it's way...

REVIEW: Kammerflimmer Kollektief - Wilding

8.5 out of 10

Kammerflimmer Kollektief is a band based out of Germany. What started out as a solo project for Thomas Weber, slowly but surely grew into a full-time band. "Wilding" is the group's fourth full length, and what I'm sure many critics will say "their best". The music Kammerflimmer Kollektief creates is Avant-Garde Jazz music with hints of downbeat Pop music & estranged atmospheric bliss. Think Nudge gone Jazzy.

Dream Poppers and Jazz heads may not always agree on music tastes. The same "ideas" are present in some ways, but their is obviously a difference between the two. On "Wilding" I think the line between those sounds has been blurred. Fragments of piano, deep seeded bass lines, xylophone, saxophone, accordion, harmonium, and guitar effects are meshed into a washed out landscape which act as the back drop to Heike Aumüller's precocious/seductive vocals. Not all tracks have vocals, many of them do, but the ones that don't come off as mysterious and elegant. Or better yet something you could really dig sitting in the back of a super dark Jazz club. The instruments that stick out the most are the sovereign bass lines and the complex guitar tones. After that would be the terrific vocals which lull listeners to the point of nirvana. With previous KK albums it seemed the focus was more on "structured" noise/ambiance. With "Wilding" the focus is shifted towards a form of music most people would agree upon given the right "downbeat" mindset. I wish more bands were as experimental with their sound as Kammerflimmer Kollektief are with theirs.

"Wilding" comes off as s soundtrack to the most bizarre Western Art film never made. If you're at all a fan of Nick Cave & Warren Ellis' recent score work you may like this. If you're a fan of the band Nudge you WILL LOVE this. If you're looking for some chill abstract atmospheres that can keep your attention without boring you yet let you focus on becoming numb get this now. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Standout Tracks: I like em all, check these out for sure; Move Right In, Aum A Go-Go (love this track), In Translation (Version) (this track could drag on for days and it wouldn't bother me), Cry Tuff (I love when the white noise picks up in this one, then the dreamy guitar riffs begin..oh my), We Paint The Town Beige

Have you heard about the Neu! box set yet??

NEU! "Complete Retrospective" Limited Edition Vinyl Box Set comes out June 29th, 2010 via Groenland Records

From Michael Rother (1/2 Neu!):
"I am very happy to know that with the NEU! vinyl box set our fans will for the first time have the opportunity to hear the whole bandwidth of NEU!. My partner Klaus Dinger sadly passed away in 2008 but he has been in our minds all during the work on this box set and his visual ideas for NEU! were our inspiration. . . Most of all I'm thrilled about the release of the album NEU! ´86 which Klaus Dinger and I originally recorded in 1985/86, but left unfinished back then and which led to some unfortunate problems between Klaus and myself in the 90s. I now completely reworked the album from original multi-track and master tapes, and unearthed a few yet unknown tracks, which are essential for a full understanding of what Klaus and I focused on for NEU! in the mid 80s. It was my aim to present Klaus Dinger’s musical strengths and visions just as much as my own ideas. The best musical result was to be my only guideline, not the ego. All during the emotional process of reworking our album Klaus was on my mind and I contemplated what he would think about my decisions."

Here's whats inside!:
4 vinyl LPs & 1 vinyl maxi-single including:
NEU!
NEU! 2
NEU! ‘75
NEU! ’86
NEU! ’72 non-public test
36 pages picturebook & NEU! stencil
Personal download code for digital versions of the songs and free NEU! t-shirt

Here's my favorite track ever of theirs. From the album "'75":

Bjork and Yoko Ono should do something together, that's a pairing that makes sense to me..

Did you hear? Kurt Vile has a new EP coming out..

Every time I pull myself away from listening to Mr. Vile's recordings I seem to forget how truly/undeniably/amazingly talented he truly IS.
