REVIEW: Our Brother The Native - Sacred Psalms

7.75 out of 10

"Sacred Psalms" is Our Brother The Native's third proper release. The band is off of the Fat Cat label which is also home to Mum, whom they sound like ..well more of an "analog" version of Mum, but still whimsical and precocious. "Sacred Psalms" is what I call a "campfire album", due to it's organic nature/ambience. OBTN's frolicsome hymns are sure to leave the listener in a state of tranquil enchantment.

On "Sacred Psalms" you will hear children's toys plucked, shattered, and put back together (kind of like CocoRosie) in the background of dreamy acoustic/electronic "Tunng-like" guitar sounds, tribalistic drumming, credulous vocals that bring to mind Mum, Efterklang, or sometimes Animal Collective, short wave radio samples (think Silver Mt. Zion), and "worlds-y" sounds which range from a gorgeous sunset drenched beach to a hidden temple somewhere in the far east. The overall vibe of this album is "upbeat", but not too "upbeat" (see the track "Dusk"). The amount of raw emotion exhibited in each track is startling. And the fact that 20 year old kids produce the music is jaw "dropping-ly" amazing/IMPRESSIVE.

When describing this album "eccentric", "unfeigned", and "glittering" may be the best terms to use. Another good description would be "one of the BEST Albums of 09". Expect many words over this band in the near future.

Standout Tracks: Manes, Someday, Dusk (oh my ..reminds me of Azeda Booth), Child Banter, Awaken (sounds like a Parisian delight), Sores, Behold, Endless Winter
