REVIEW: Robert Le Magnifique / L'Unijambiste - Hamlet Thème & Variations

7.75 out of 10

"Hamlet Thème & Variations" is another French album I checked into because of Abstrackt Keal Agram's hand in it. Like Psykick Lyrikah, Robert Le Magnifique blends acrid/dark electronic sounds with Hip Hop. Only with "Hamlet Thème & Variations" there is more of focus on Industrial noise/harsh frequencies and even Classical moments.

Once again, assuming you're ok with French speaking vocals, experimental electronics/mad sampling, Hip Hop, and Industrial, this album will be right up your alley. For the most part "Hamlet Thème & Variations" emits a "laid back" style of music. "Hamlet Thème & Variations" also provides a fair amount of loud/harsh drum beats, sub drops, "Histoire De Melody Nelson-esque" spoken dialogue pieces, upright bass sounds, some of the best record scratching ever, and Jazz-y moments.

At times "Hamlet Thème & Variations" comes off as a "grimey" Serge Gainsbourg album, had he produced one more with today's "modern" themes involved. Or even a lost Young Gods album, had they ever dabbled in Hip Hop. I consider this release essential to anyone into the French music scene.

Standout Tracks: Etre (feat. Arm, Olivier Mellano, Ezra & Nicolas Petisoff), Thème Et Variations (feat. Olivier Mellano, Quatuor Debussy, Ezra & François Jeanneau), Claudius Et Gertrude (feat. François Jeanneau), La Souricière (feat. Arm), 8. L'infortunée (feat. Emmanuelle Hiron & Marie Cayrol), Les Fossoyeurs (feat. Doox, Jean-François Sirérol & Nicolas Petisoff), Le Poison : 1000 Bruits (feat. Arm & Olivier Mellano), Ne Doute Jamais De Mon Amour (feat. Olivier Mellano), Fortinbras (feat. Arm & Haris Resic)
