REVIEW: Richard Devine - Aleamapper

7.5 out of 10

Richard Devine is one of the best/most overlooked electronic producers out there. His "sound" is much like Autechres, only even more machine based. His odd, and sometimes sparse, time signatures are comparable to Aphex Twin, maybe better. His "found sounds"/bizarre sampling is as close to hearing Raymond Scott play haunted house/broken down possessed factory music that you'll ever get. Recent artists like Murcof or Ben Frost are also comparable... let's just say he's damn impressive..

"Aleamapper" is Mr. Devine's first solo effort into the world of machine driven dins. First thing you need to know when listening to "Aleamapper" is that "machine" is definitely the key word. Besides creating intriguing time signatures of sparse beats and clicks, Richard Devine also focuses heavily on the ambient side with this release. It's not the "pretty" side of ambience though. "Aleamapper" is that long dark hallway you don't want to walk down during the middle of the night. "Aleamapper" is your heart skipping beats erratically from thoughts of disturbing imagery. "Aleamapper" is a "damned" robot's soul being delivered to the bowels of robot hell.

I can imagine this album a good anthem for technosexualists.

If you're into "modern/machine like sounds", experimental/gorgeous ambiences, IDM, Dark Industrial metaphors, or just one of the "smartest" possible producers out there look into ALL of Richard Devine's work. If you start here, you won't end here. You will want more, that is, if you have robot ears of course.

Standout Tracks: Vecpr, Step.Focus, Model (LOVE THIS TRACK), Float.82 (Nice soothing track..), Mtr.Method
