REVIEW: Crocodiles - Summer Of Hate

8.25 out of 10

Crocodiles have been getting quite a lot of buzz online recently. San Diego City Beat says "A darker, more caustic brand of shoegaze rock, complete with feedback, drum machines and pedals galore. As one onlooker remarked, "If (Factory Records exec) Tony Wilson were alive, he'd sign 'em." But is Crocodiles debut full length album "Summer Of Hate" really worth all of the hype?

YES! (and then some..)

Crocodiles are a Shoegaze Psychedelia band in vein of The Jesus And Mary Chain meets A Place To Bury Strangers meets Asobi Seksu meets No Age. When all of those bands are blended together you know your ears are in for a fantastical treat. The main instrument of choice on "Summer Of Hate" is definitely the guitar. Sometimes its set to chorus, sometimes reverb, sometimes tremolo, and sometimes who knows what, but it's always dreamy or aggressive. The drum machine on top of live drums was also good choice for this release. The keyboards are simple, but essential to the package of noise. The male vocals go from screaming to swooning you in a style that only a good Shoegaze/Psych band could. "Here Comes The Sky" is probably my favorite track. It's a little more laid back, but the tremolo effect on the guitar are "oh so nice". Reminds me of APTBS's "The Falling Sun". "Sleeping With The Lord" is also a nice laid back "Psychgaze" song. "Young Drugs" is one of the best songs I've heard all year, a perfect ender to a near perfect album.

"Summer Of Hate" is the Jesus And Mary Chain album I was always looking for. "Summer Of Hate" is one of the best albums you will hear all year long. "Summer Of Hate" is also one of the best Shoegaze/Psychedelic/Rock albums you might ever hear. Check into this release IMMEDIATELY.

Standout Tracks: I Wanna Kill, Soft Skull (In My Room), Here Comes The Sky, Flask Of Light, Sleeping With The Lord, Summer Of Hate, Young Drugs
