REVIEW: Steroid Maximus - Ectopia

8 out of 10

In Medicine an "Ectopia" is a displacement or malposition of an organ of the body. I'm not sure why that's relevant to the music, but googling it does bring up some painful looking photos.

Foetus has always been very hit and miss for most people. That's what happens when you're songs flux from Jazz to Industrial-Noise verse to verse. J.G. Thirwell is no doubt talented, and with his "Steroid Maximus" moniker he really flexes his chops. Imagine great spy music. Lots of horns and a beat that makes you feel good to wear a tuxedo. Now imagine James Bond in a Halloween film. Bad ass right? Right. It's much like the score work he's doing for The Venture Brothers, but with much darker, broader, and more experimental tones.

Steroid Maximus' sound is that which will probably never be copied. From lush and somber sweeps to moments of paranoid horror, this album is where it's at. I gain a new favorite part with every listen. The entire album is very cohesive, as it flows tirelessly from track to track. "Tarmac A Gris-Gris" sounds like a great Raymond Scott track. Most of it has a sneaking around vibe, which makes it a great album to drive to.

Standout Tracks: Pretty much all of them..... WM is my favorite though, it has a "Sci-Fi" feel to it.
