REVIEW: Ben Folds - Way To Normal

7.5 out of 10

This album was a pleasant surprise for me. Since I'm a sucker for anything piano I've pretty much always been a Ben Folds fan. I've never really been let down in anyway. Yet, at the same time, he's never absolutely blown me away. He's just always been fun and consistent which is a lot more than what I can say for other pop acts out there. I was a huge fan of his 2005 effort "Songs For Silverman", but I'm confident in saying that this, for me, will prove to be his best effort yet.

The album starts out with a live, head-bobbin' antidote about him falling off the stage at one of his shows in Hiroshima (also the track name) and yet manages to complete the show with a concussion. Track two really kicks it up a notch. This songs induces more than just a toe-tappin'. It's the most up-tempo track and features a strong drum beat, distorted guitars and gut-screams. Easily my favorite track. Perhaps the catchiest of all tracks is "You Don't Know Me" featuring Regina Spector. The track entitled "Cologne" delves into the pains of letting a loved one go. But if your not feeling that sappy, the album also includes the ULTIMATE break-up song appropriately named "Bitch Went Nuts". Everything else on this album ranges from the perks of being famous to being pussy-whipped. And of course, there's absolutely NO shortage of humor and profanity. See? Consistent.

Overall, this is an uber-fun, "anytime of the day" type of record in a sense that it covers nearly the entire spectrum of human emotion. It's sure to pick you up, put a smile on your face and drag you out of any funk.

Standout Tracks: Dr. Yang, Free Coffee & Effington
